Buford holds the top spot in the latest 2023 Georgia high school football rankings by MaxPreps. They’ve started the season strongly with three wins, with their most recent victory being an impressive 45-28 triumph over North Cobb.
Langston Hughes is ranked second, and right behind them are Mill Creek and Walton. In the top 10, we also find Carrollton, Parkview, Westlake, Grayson, Norcross, Benedictine, Ware County, and Milton.
Although it’s still early in the Georgia High School Football season, the competition is intense. Buford, the defending state champions, is looking formidable, but there are many other strong teams in the mix.

History of Georgia High School Football
High school football has been a big deal in Georgia for a very long time. They started playing the first official game back in 1895, and in 1920, they made the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Georgia has seen some really awesome football players over the years, like Herschel Walker, Tim Tebow, and David Greene. These guys were so good that they became famous not just in Georgia, but all over the country. Plus, Georgia has won 11 national championships in high school football, which is more than any other state.
Nowadays, people in Georgia absolutely love high school football. It ranks among the most widely enjoyed sports in the region. The GHSA is in charge, and they work with more than 400 schools to make sure everything is fair and square. And when it’s time for the state playoffs, you can bet they’re some of the toughest and most exciting games around.
High school football started in Georgia way back in 1895 when Atlanta High School and Marietta High School faced off in the very first organized game. They played at Ponce de Leon Park in Atlanta, and Atlanta came out on top with a score of 20-6.
In those early days, private schools and academies were the main players in high school football. But as time went on and more people fell in love with the game, public schools joined in, and the sport started to grow even more.
The GHSA
In 1920, something important happened for high school sports in Georgia. The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) was born. This group is like the boss of all things related to high school sports in Georgia, including football. They ensure that everything operates smoothly and equitably.
The GHSA divides teams into different groups, kind of like different levels. The top group is called 7A, and then there’s 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, A Public, and A Private. Each group has its own rules and ways of doing things to keep the games fair and exciting.
Notable Moments
There have been many notable moments in the history of Georgia high school football. Let’s highlight some of the standout moments:

- In 1979, Herschel Walker rushed for 3,167 yards and 45 touchdowns in leading Johnson County High School to the state championship. Walker went on to play college football at the University of Georgia and in the NFL.
- In 1980, Buford High School won its first of 17 state championships. Buford is the defending state champion.
- In 2007, Warner Robins High School won the state championship with a perfect 15-0 record.
- In 2022, Mill Creek High School won the state championship, becoming the first team from Gwinnett County to do so.
